Beyrouth-Express est un projet né sur scène, suite à l’explosion du port de Beyrouth qui a eu lieu le 4 août 2020. De concert avec le musicien François Lindemann, le 27 août 2020, j’ai réuni des musiciens d’origine suisse et arabe au Casino de Montbenon de Lausanne ainsi qu’un large public afin de marquer un temps d’intégration de la tragédie et de récolter des fonds pour que les acteurs culturels au Liban puissent continuer à œuvrer, à étudier et à s’exprimer.
Un 27 août qui m’aura particulièrement touchée. De par la générosité des musiciens et de par un public nombreux et enthousiaste. Il m’a donné envie de déployer le projet au-delà de la soirée.

J’ai d’abord proposé d’enregistrer les titres joués le 27 en Studio en Suisse puis de réaliser une résidence et une tournée au Liban au printemps 2022. Afin que musiciens libanais et suisses se rencontrent. Et afin de donner un nouveau souffle au projet. La résidence a abouti à une deuxième session de Studio au Liban. L’album Beyrouth-Express, somme de ces événements, est riche en rencontres et en émotions. Je souhaite qu’il puisse marquer le début d’une passerelle d’échange et de nouveaux possibles entre les deux pays.

Beyrouth-Express is a project that was born right on stage, following the August 4^th chemical explosion in the port of Beirut, Lebanon. On August 27^th 2020, the musician François Lindemann and I gathered Swiss and Arab musicians at the Montbenon Casino in Lausanne, in front of a large audience. The intention was twofold; to raise awareness around the port tragedy and to raise funds to benefit the cultural sector in Lebanon, enabling the continuation of expression, production, and education in the arts and culture. The August 27^th performance moved me immensely because of the generosity of the musicians on the one hand, and the large and enthusiastic public turnout on the other. I therefore felt the desire to prolong this experience, and take it beyond that one night.

I initially suggested recording the tracks played on the 27^th in a Swiss studio, then touring with them in Lebanon in the Spring of 2022. This enabled Swiss and Lebanese musicians to meet and gave new life to the project. While in Lebanon, we were in residence at Hammana Artist House – where a second recording session was held. The album Beyrouth-Express is the sum of all those events, enriched by all those we met along the way and the emotions we shared. I hope this will mark the beginning of enriching cultural exchanges across borders, and give birth to new possibilities.

Beyrouth-Express ist ein Projekt, das direkt von der Bühne weg entstanden ist, wenige Wochen nach der Explosion im Hafen von Beirut, die sich am 4. August 2020 ereignete. Am 27. August 2020 versammelte ich zusammen mit dem Musiker François Lindemann schweizerische und arabische Musiker*innen zu einem Konzert im Casino de Montbenon in Lausanne. Der Abend war dazu gedacht, der Tragödie zu gedenken und Spenden für die libanesische Kulturszene zu sammeln, damit diese trotz allem weiter kreiere, recherchiere und sich äußere. Bewegt vom Engagement der Musiker*innen und dem enthusiastischen, zahlreich erschienen Publikum, hatte ich die Idee, das Projekt über den Abend hinaus zu tragen.

Als Erstes schlug ich vor, die Stücke des Konzertes des 27. August in der Schweiz im Studio aufzunehmen. Daraufhin sollte die neu gegründete Formation im Frühling 2022 zu einem Aufenthalt und einer Tournee nach Libanon aufbrechen. Tatsächlich gab diese Tournee den libanesischen und schweizer Musikern die Möglichkeit, sich über einen längeren Zeitraum auszutauschen und so entwickelte Beyrouth-Express ein inspirierendes Eigenleben. Der Aufenthalt im Hammana Artist House endete im April 2022 schliesslich in einer zweiten Aufnahmesession. Das dabei entstandene Album erfasst all diese Erfahrungen, Begegnungen und Emotionen. Beyrouth-Express stellt eine Schwelle dar, ein Ort des Austauschs über neue Möglichkeiten zwischen den Landesgrenzen.

Beirut-Express è un progetto nato sul palco, a seguito dell’esplosione del porto di Beirut avvenuta il 4 agosto 2020. Insieme al musicista François Lindemann, il 27 agosto 2020 ho riunito musicisti di origine svizzera e araba al Casinò di Montbenon di Losanna e un vasto pubblico per celebrare un momento di integrazione della tragedia e raccogliere fondi affinché gli attori culturali in Libano possano continuare a lavorare, studiare ed esprimere se stessi. Un 27 agosto che mi ha particolarmente commossa per la generosità dei musicisti e di un pubblico numeroso ed entusiasta. Cio’ mi ha spinta a portare il progetto oltre la serata.

Prima ho proposto di registrare i brani suonati il 27 nello studio di registrazione in Svizzera e poi di realizzare una residenza e un tour in Libano nella primavera del 2022 affinchè gli artisti svizzeri e libanesi potessero incontrarsi in modo da dare un nuovo respiro al progetto. La permanenza si è conclusa con una seconda sessione di Studio in Libano. L’album Beirut-Express, somma di questi eventi, è ricco di incontri ed emozioni. Spero che possa segnare l’inizio di un ponte di scambio e di nuove possibilità tra i due paesi.
